Raised in West Yorkshire, Andy Connell took a history degree at Queen’s College, Oxford and taught his subject for a living. His research papers on Cumbrian-related political and social history have appeared in various academic journals since 2006. His book-length study of the history and mythology of Appleby Gypsy Horse Fair was published in 2015 and (revised) 2019. Formerly mayor of Appleby, he serves on Eden District and Cumbria County Councils.
