Born in Carlisle and educated at the Austin Friar’s School, he qualified as a librarian at Newcastle Library College and began work in Carlisle Public Library, then housed in Tullie House. in 1984 he was appointed local studies librarian in Carlisle Library, his main duty being the care, preservation, development and exploitation of the nationally important Jackson Library. This collection of over 20,000 books covers every aspect of Lakes Counties life. Over many years he has assisted numerous researchers and family historians in their studies, collaborating closely with the local historian Denis Perriam. Among the many projects he has nurtured are David Cross’s work on Public Sculpture, Cumbrian Lives and many articles in the CWAAS Transactions.
